Cannabis Compliance Hardware Guide

Metrc Compliance Hardware Buying Guide

NTEP scales, rugged mobile computers, barcode scanners, RFID hardware, and label printers for Metrc-enabled cannabis operations.

Metrc compliance hardware bundle

If you operate a licensed cannabis business in a Metrc state, your compliance is only as reliable as the hardware supporting it. Metrc—Marijuana Enforcement Tracking Reporting Compliance—is the seed-to-sale tracking system used by many U.S. cannabis regulators, and every plant, package, transfer, and sale must be weighed, scanned, tagged, and reported accurately.

This guide covers the five hardware categories that matter most to a Metrc-enabled cannabis operation: NTEP-certified scales, rugged mobile computers, barcode scanners, RFID hardware, and label printers. Each section explains what compliance actually requires, key purchasing considerations, and specific products we carry for building a dependable compliance workflow.

Important information about Metrc tags: Official Metrc UID tags are ordered directly from Metrc and shipped to your licensed facility. Licensees do not print replacement Metrc plant or package tags themselves. The hardware in this guide is used to weigh inventory, scan official identifiers, track assets, and print supplementary product or packaging labels.

Regulatory caveat: Cannabis regulations change frequently and vary by state and local jurisdiction. This guide is a hardware-purchasing framework and is not legal advice. Confirm current requirements with your state cannabis regulator and local weights-and-measures authority before purchasing or placing equipment into service.

01

NTEP-Certified Legal-for-Trade Scales

Scales are among the most heavily regulated pieces of equipment in a cannabis operation because recorded weights affect commerce, inventory, production yields, and regulatory reporting.

A scale used in a commercial transaction where price is determined by weight generally must be Legal for Trade, covered by an active NTEP Certificate of Conformance, and installed per your state or local weights-and-measures authority.

02

Rugged Android Mobile Computers

Mobile computers combine an enterprise barcode scanner, touchscreen, wireless connectivity, and a full operating system so cultivation, processing, warehouse, and dispensary teams can complete inventory workflows without returning to a fixed workstation.

Prioritize an integrated 2D imager, durable construction, appropriate IP sealing, replaceable batteries, and confirmed compatibility with your Metrc-integrated seed-to-sale software.

04

RFID Readers and Handheld Hardware

Official Metrc tags may incorporate an embedded RFID inlay in addition to their printed identifiers. Many operators rely primarily on barcode scanning, while RFID can add efficiency for bulk counting and workflows where direct line of sight is impractical.

Fixed UHF readers cover doorways, zones, and portals, while a handheld RFID mobile computer lets staff walk the floor and read tags directly during inventory counts and audits.

05

Compliance Label Printers

State packaging regulations may require cannabis warning symbols, license numbers, cannabinoid content, net weight, batch or lot identifiers, and required warnings. Your printer must support the label dimensions, resolution, connectivity, and media your packaging workflow needs.

Direct thermal printing suits shorter-duration labels without a ribbon. Thermal transfer offers greater resistance to moisture, oils, abrasion, and extended storage with the correct ribbon and label material.
