How to measure your current receipt-paper roll
Step 1
Measure the width
Place a ruler across the face of the roll from one paper edge to the other.
Do not measure around the roll. The result will usually be close to
3 1/8 inches or 2 1/4 inches for common POS paper.
Step 2
Measure the diameter
Measure across the full circular roll from one outside edge to the opposite
edge. Use a new or nearly full roll, because a partially used roll will not
reveal the original outside diameter.
Step 3
Identify the paper type
Confirm whether the printer uses thermal paper or bond paper. The printer
model and manual provide the most reliable answer.
Fast thermal-paper test:
Firmly scratch the paper with a fingernail or the edge of a coin. The coated side
of thermal paper will usually produce a dark line from friction. This can help
identify thermal paper, but the printer specification remains the best source.

No ink ribbon required
Thermal Receipt Paper
Direct-thermal printers use heat to create text and images on coated thermal
paper. They do not use ink, toner or a printing ribbon.
Common uses include:

- Service-business receipts
Ink ribbon required
Bond Receipt Paper
Impact printers strike an ink ribbon against ordinary bond paper. This method
is often used where heat, grease or humidity may cause problems for
heat-sensitive thermal paper.
Common uses include:
- Kitchen order tickets
- Impact receipt printers
- Multi-ply forms on supported printers
- Hot food-preparation areas
- Non-thermal printing environments
Do not interchange the two paper types.
Thermal paper will not produce a normal receipt in an impact printer, and ordinary
bond paper will come out blank in a direct-thermal printer.

Only when the resulting outside diameter fits inside the printer. A longer
roll normally has a larger diameter and may prevent the printer cover from
closing.
Does the paper core size matter?
